The 3 levers against screen addiction — what research actually recommends

Against screen time you fight with willpower. Against screen addiction you fight with systems. Three levers — one of them is enough to get started.

You fight every evening. Your child fights too — but against themselves. Nobody really wins.

That's not because you haven't tried hard enough. It's because you're fighting against a system that was optimised against you.

But the same model that platforms use against you, you can use for yourself.

The behaviour model — read backwards

Research shows: every behaviour needs motivation + ease + trigger simultaneously. Problematic scrolling is easy, motivating, and has triggers everywhere.

To stop a bad habit, it's enough to disrupt just one of these three factors.

Lever 1 — Reduce motivation

Make the real costs visible — not as punishment, but as information.

  • Look together at how much time is actually going there (screen time report)
  • Show what would be possible in the same time
  • Talk about feelings after long screen sessions — children notice them but rarely name them

Slowest to take effect. Motivation is emotional and fluctuates. This lever alone is rarely sufficient.

Lever 2 — Reduce ease (increase friction)

This is the most effective lever — because it can be used technically and structurally.

  • Device charges in the hallway, not the bedroom
  • DNS filter on the router makes problematic content unreachable — before the impulse even arises
  • Disable autoplay on all devices
  • No WiFi password for children's devices — parents control when access exists

Works immediately and lastingly. Once set up, it doesn't need daily enforcement.

Lever 3 — Remove triggers

A trigger (cue) starts the habit chain. No cue — no chain.

  • Notifications on silent or fully disabled
  • Devices out of sight (out of sight, out of mind — literally)
  • Fixed screen-free times as routine — not as a ban, but as structure

Works well in combination with Lever 2.

Which lever suits you?

You don't have to tackle all three at once. Start with the one that generates the least resistance in your household. One of the three is enough to tip the system.

The combination that works best

Research and practice show: Lever 2 + Lever 3 together is most effective.

Increase friction (device away, DNS filter) + remove triggers (no notifications, fixed times) — this gives the child little opportunity to fall into old patterns. Without arguments, without daily discussion.

Motivation often follows automatically: children who spend less time scrolling frequently report feeling better themselves.

Where to start?

Two options — depending on your situation:

Immediately, technically: Set up a DNS filter. 20 minutes. Works from the first evening.
