Reducing Screen Time: Why Bans Fail — and What Actually Works

Less screen time — without arguments and without guilt. Why this is a question of system design, not discipline.

Before we talk about your children's screen time, we need to talk about yours.

Honestly: how many times have you checked your phone today? Before the kids got up? At the breakfast table? At a red light?

We know the feeling. And that's exactly why we know: reducing screen time only works when the WHOLE family joins in — adults first.

Why bans alone aren't enough

Anyone who tries to limit screen time by banning it knows the pattern: today you hold firm. Tomorrow you don't. Children learn this quickly — and simply wait it out.

It's not a lack of discipline. It's because bans require willpower — every single day. And willpower is a finite resource.

What works: structures and rituals instead of daily negotiations. Once set up well, they run in the background — without drama, without discussion.

An example: the device parking spot

No new technology, no app to download. Simply a fixed spot in the house where all devices go after a certain time — parents' phones included.

Why this works

Children accept the structure because they see that Mum and Dad join in. The rule applies to everyone — not just the kids.

Sounds simple. It is — once the framework is in place. The question is: how do you introduce such a routine as a family without it fizzling out after a week?

What really helps: a system, not a one-off trick

Good family routines need more than an idea. They need:

  • a clear moment — exactly when, who, how
  • a ritual that anchors the routine
  • a plan for when it doesn't go to plan
