Internet Shield or App Locks? What actually protects all devices

Your child has a smartphone. Maybe a tablet too. A laptop for school. The games console in their room. The Smart TV in the living room.

App locks protect one of those.

That's the core problem — and at the same time the reason many parents find themselves starting from scratch after a while.

What app locks can do — and what they can't

App locks and parental control apps are useful when they fit. They're quick to set up and offer helpful features:

Screen time limits per app or device
Content filter for a single browser
Time windows during which certain apps are blocked

The problem: they only work on the device they're installed on. Consoles don't run iOS. Smart TVs run on their own systems. The guest WiFi is out of reach anyway. And if the child has a second device — or is at a friend's house — the app lock doesn't apply.

What's more: children quickly learn how to bypass restrictions on individual devices. What's technically blocked on one is open on the next.

What an internet shield on the router delivers

An internet shield operates at a higher level — the router that supplies the entire home network. Every device that connects to the WiFi is automatically included:

Smartphones and tablets
Games consoles (PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch)
Smart TVs and streaming sticks
Laptops and school computers
Guest WiFi too

No app download, no setup on every device, no ongoing management. Set up once on the router — permanently active.

Another point parents often care about: an internet shield filters at DNS level. It doesn't log content, take screenshots, or read messages. It simply prevents certain addresses from being resolved — before the page even loads.

When an app lock makes sense

There are situations where app locks are the right complement:

Younger children under 8 with a single device — here device-bound controls are sufficient and simpler
Per-app screen time limits — "30 minutes YouTube, then that's it" — an internet shield alone can't do this
As a second layer on top of router protection, for maximum visibility on individual devices

Combining is possible

An internet shield and app lock are not mutually exclusive. Many families use both: router protection for the entire network and an app lock additionally on the child's smartphone for time limits.

When an internet shield is the better choice

In most households with school-age children, an internet shield on the router is the more effective solution — because the network as a whole is secured, not each device individually.

This applies especially when:

Multiple devices are used in the household
Consoles or Smart TVs are present that don't support their own parental control app
You don't want to set up and maintain every device separately
The child might use a sibling's or guest's WiFi

The decisive difference: the internet shield doesn't need the child's cooperation. It's simply there — in the background, without discussion.
