Threema GmbH
Threema is a Swiss messenger with end-to-end encryption. It works without a phone number or email address; each user is reached via a randomly generated Threema ID.

Why NUNIVIA rates additionally
Official labels (USK, PEGI) primarily refer to content such as violence or language. Purchase pressure, loot boxes, addictive mechanics and manipulative UI designs (dark patterns) have only been gradually included since 2023 — older ratings do not yet fully reflect this. NUNIVIA therefore additionally evaluates real everyday risks, including UI tricks such as countdown timers, virtual currencies, FOMO events and hidden decline options.
Assessment for messenger app
Threema processes very little data and is operated in Switzerland. No known proceedings or consumer warnings. Note: in Germany the age of consent for using a messaging service independently is 16. For younger children, Threema is often easier to control than Signal because of its anonymous Threema ID: no one can contact the child without knowing the ID — and the ID is only shared with parental approval. Threema also has no parental dashboard; control relies on manual ID sharing and agreed-upon rules.

| 16+GDPR threshold | Art. 8 GDPR | Data protection consent — parents implicitly consent to the provider's data processing. |
